The
USDA-ARS Everglades Agro-Hydrology Research Unit (EAHRU) was established
in February 1998.
Our mission is to provide hydrologic science and technology needed
to sustain agricultural production and a quality environment in
south Florida. The focus of the unit is primarily on the south Florida
region which has a unique hydrologic system with:
1. Low-gradient drainage
2. Typically high ground water table
3. Extensive drainage canal network
4. Direct impact on the hydrology affecting the Everglades National
Park restoration plan
The main Unit's specific objectives are to:
1. Assess the fundamentals interrelationship between the hydrology
of the drainage canals and the agricultural production in south
Dade County
2. Conduct agro-hydrology field experiments and modeling studies
3. Develop a farm scale computer model that will simulate the water
balance, crop production, pesticide and nutrient movement within
the unsaturated zone
4. Link the farm scale model with a regional hydrologic model.
Action and regulatory agencies will use EAHRU's experimental results
and the computer model in agricultural
and environmental decision making and planning.
