The Diaprepes Root Weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus, is a pest that severely impacts not only the citrus industry, but ornamental plants and sugar cane as well. To meet this threat, researchers require a predictable supply of pests for their experiments. The USHRL Insectary was originally established in Orlando, Florida, prior to its move to a new facility in Ft. Pierce. At peak production it has held as many as 40,000 Diaprepes Root Weevil adults, pupae, and larvae. The insects are reared on artificial diet, and then supplied to scientists both at the USHRL and throughout the United States. At present other pests, including whiteflies and aphids, are also being reared.
Whiteflies are another pest reared at the USHRL Insectary.
The new Insectary has an floor space of 4,500 square feet, 1000 of which consists of a state-of-the-art, climate controlled greenhouse where insects can be reared on their host plants. In addition, the facility has sophisticated climate controlled rearing chambers to maintain special environments for particular rearing programs.
The Diaprepes Root Weevil, a pest with a taste for a broad variety of plants, is reared in the insectary for entomological research.

The Insectary is managed by Karin Crosby. Visitors are welcomed. Please give advance notice by calling (561) 462-5835 or by e-mail at kcrosby@ushrl.ars.usda.gov.
