Subtropical Insects
Research Unit

The Subtropical Insects Research Unit conducts basic and applied research on insect pests of citrus and other subtropical and tropical fruits and vegetables. Information on the biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology and physiology of the insects and their interactions with plants and plant pathogens is obtained to improve or design new management strategies. Research includes evaluation and study of insect vectors of citrus, vegetable, and ornamental diseases; biological control of citrus insect pests by use of nematodes, other insect pathogens, and parasites; study of citrus resistance to insects; characterization of effects of plant products on insects; and biochemical and molecular characterization of plant defensive proteins and phytochemicals.
