Current Research Projects

Dr. Hunter is conducting research on the epidemiology of citrus tristeza virus transmission by the brown citrus aphid, Toxoptera citricida. This entails examination of the aphid's biology, host preferences, and the virus-plant-insect interactions, which lead to the transmission of citrus tristeza viruses. Current research is on the screening of citrus varieties for natural resistance to either the aphid or to citrus tristeza virus infection. Dr. Hunter also works on invasive insect vectors such as the silverleaf whitefly and the asian citrus psyllid. Additionally, he works with insect tissue culture and establishes insect cell lines to study plant disease transmission.
