Current Research Projects
Dr. Chaparro is responsible for citrus scion breeding. The research is oriented to generate cultivars with enhanced commercial traits and to generate knowledge as to the genetic control of fruit quality and cold resistance in citrus. Molecular markers are being used to generate genomic maps and marker trait associations for sweet orange and Poncirus trifoliata to aid in the breeding program. The breeding program is focused on the development of high quality seedless early and late ripening citrus cultivars and the introgression of cold hardiness from Poncirus trifoliata.
