Objectives of the research in this MU are to collect, develop, evaluate, preserve, and distribute germplasm of cultivated plant species and their close relatives for use in producing multigenic pest-resistant crops to aid in insect and aflatoxin management systems. Fulfillment of these objectives will be realized by developing fundamental knowledge of pest biologies; mechanisms that govern host finding, recognition, and insect developmental behavior; taxonomic relationships that govern interactions among host plants and their insect fauna; biochemical and genetic bases for plant resistance that provide crop protection against insect pests; and transfer of these findings/technologies to industry. Research in this MU is addressed in Subproblems 2.2.2.2, 2.2.2.4, 2.2.2.3, and 2.1.2.5.
