Agriculture in the Southeast (SE) is characterized by diversity in crops as well as an array of pestiferous and beneficial insect species that impact on the productivity and quality of plants and crop products. Several species of pests affecting SE agriculture are highly mobile and voracious (causing a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars annually), and require integrated approaches for population management in overwintering habitats as well as in recipient crops throughout their range. Based on the ARS Program Plan, research emphasis is moving toward developing pest management systems for both migratory and resident insects in the complex cropping systems of the SE.
