The objective of the research in this MU is to seek new knowledge on biology, ecology, and population dynamics of insect pests of field crops and their associated parasites, predators, and pathogens as bases for developing efficient, economical, and environmentally sound management strategies. To accomplish this objective, emphases will be placed on understanding mate- and host-selection processes (e.g., interdependent roles of chemical, visual, tactical, and acoustical stimuli); developing autocidal-genetic manipulation strategies to produce superior strains of beneficial insects and pathogens and/or inferior strains of pest species; and discovering new principles and agricultural technology for conserving/augmenting entomophagous and entomogenous species while judiciously integrating the use of chemical pesticides into sound pest management systems. Research in this MU is addressed in Subproblems 2.2.2.4, 2.2.2.1, and 2.2.4.1 if the ARS Strategic Plan.
